Let's give a warm welcome to Kate, owner of OneofAKate!

All About Kate

Do you have a job outside of this?

If you count being a racer’s wife and pug mom, then yes; otherwise,
I live & breathe yarn.

What’s your dream vacation spot?

Any place warm

What’s your favorite color(s)?

Black, White & Gold or anything Sparkle

What’s your favorite food/meal?

I live for carbs and sweets

What’s your least favorite food/meal?

Sauerkraut and Seafood

Do you have a favorite movie or TV show?

Somewhat disturbing, but I can’t get enough true crime

What’s a quote that you live by?

There are no mistakes, just unique creations

Do you have other hobbies ?

I once also enjoyed cross
stitch as well as scrapbooking, but I haven’t found time for it in years. I sporadically make an effort in fitness, too.

What’s 1 (or more) weird/strange fact(s) about you?

Before going full-time maker, I worked at a
biker bar for nearly 10 years…yes, i have my motorcycle license.

If you had a theme song, WHAT would it be?

I asked my friends for help here & this is what I got:
Fergalicious by Fergie. I love it!

What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve done in your life?

Hop on a plane after work to Vegas and
chop off all my hair.

Do you have a favorite holiday?

So cliche, but gotta go with Christmas

Do you have a favorite season?

Spring & Summer — I love longer days & colorful plants.

What inspires or motivates you?

I am a lover of most things, so I can find inspiration in too many ways to say. I do love the idea of glamifying things that may traditionally not be viewed as such. Food is also a high motivator for me.

If you could do one thing for the world (people or environment), what would it be?

Dang, what a thought-provoking question! My wish for the world is happiness, but happiness can be defined
differently for everyone. If I could, I would grant everyone & everything their own special yes day.

Anything else?

I am married to a dirt track racer who has blessed me with two bonus children who have also blessed me with three beautiful grandbabies. We have created our own little villa with my in-laws and own a total of eight dogs, four of which are my pugs. I wouldn’t call
myself a yarn snob. I love all yarns; they each have their place. If I ever had my own yarn line, it would consist of cottons, bamboo’s, nylons . . . basically everything meant for warmer months. I find them to be durable year-round fibers for me. They are also great for those who may have allergies.

All About One of AKate

How long have you been making?

I’ve been crocheting since 2003-4 and knitting since 2018.

When did you start OneofAKate?

I started OneofAKate in 2013 but created my Instagram account in 2017.

Why did you start?

I found a satisfaction from making things from string. Friends were encouraging me to sell finished makes. I started an Etsy & never made one sale. I did make some sales from word
of mouth & have gifted countless makes. After creating my Instagram account, I found the yarn community. Before I knew it, I found myself pattern testing in early 2018 and created my first design
by mid-year.

What’s your favorite thing you’ve made?

My favorite & most successful design to date is my Super Soft Coat. It’s funny because I have always been team crochet; yet, I have fallen into having more knit designs than crochet. This furry fiber is so much easier to knit with, so I couldn’t resist. It’s exciting to see crocheters encouraged to learn to knit as well. I love being able to participate in both crafts. I
foresee a crochet & possibly child-size versions of the super soft coat to come next winter.

What’s a piece of advice for someone just starting out in your field?

The best advice I can give is not to quit. I have been at this longer than most, but it took me that much time to find my lane.

Does your company have a mascot?

Not really. My mascot is basically me. I’ve adopted the glam
aesthetic.

What was your most memorable success?

Landing my first kit with Lion Brand Yarn (the knot
sweater) was so surreal & finally felt like I’m doing something right.

What was your most memorable challenge?

My biggest challenge is streamlining a process to make consistency sustainable for me.

How did or are you overcoming this challenge?

I’m still trying to figure this all out. It helps as
mainstream bloggers share their behind-the-scenes to see I’m not alone in the feeling like a duck
(looking composed but paddling for dear life under the water) and maybe get ideas on strategies that
might work for me, too.

What’s next for OneofAKate?

There will definitely be more patterns from me to come, more video content on my YouTube channel, and hopefully blog content, too.

The Future for OneofAKate

What’s your latest project?

My latest project is my Boaters Striped Cardigan, designed in collaboration with Lion Brand Yarn for their Summer Must Haves Collection.

Where did the inspiration come from for this project?

I saw a collared striped button-up on Pinterest
& thought it would make a nice transitional knit.

Have there been any challenges with this project?

Fortunately, it was a rather seamless project…lol
no pun intended (because there is quite a bit of seaming involved).

Will this be free or paid?

It is a paid pattern

Where can we find this project when it’s finished (i.e. Etsy, blog, website)?

Currently available on
Ravelry, as well as, a kit on lionbrand.com

When will it be finished?

It is live & ready as of 13 May 2021. I have yarn for 3 more designs with
them, so expect to see tester calls & pattern release announcements in the near future.
