Let's give a warm welcome to Melissa, owner of Homebody Fibers

All About Melissa

Where are you located?

Manchester, CT

Do you have a job outside of this?

I’m an assistant property manager for a multifamily community of over 400 apartment homes

What’s my dream vacation spot?

I would love to travel to Fiji one day

What’s your favorite color?

Green and anything neutral

What’s your favorite food?

I love breakfast food any time of day

What’s your least favorite food?

I once tried an olive and that was the worst idea ever

Do you have a favorite movie or TV show?

I love The Office and have rewatched it countless times

What’s a quote that you live by?

“Comparison is the thief of joy”

Do you  have other hobbies?
Sewing has been purely hobby for me over the last several months. I love making my own clothes!

What’s 1 weird/strange fact about you?

I always read magazines/catalogs from the back to the front

If you had a theme song, what would it be?

Sounds strange, but I don’t listen to music a lot, so I would have to say my theme “song” would be silence haha! I love when there is no noise at all.

What’s the most spontaneous thing you’ve done in your life?

I’m not a very spontaneous person and normally too much of an overthinker to do something on a whim, but I would say my honeymoon with my husband was super unplanned. The day after our wedding we hopped on the train and rode it all the way down to Virginia and spent a week on Virginia Beach. Everything was completely unplanned and we had a blast.

Do you have a favorite holiday?

I love Christmas time

Do you have a favorite season?

Early fall and late spring

What inspires or motivates you?

My daughters

If you could do one thing for the word, what would it be?

I’m terrible at answering hypothetical questions, so I’ll answer this way: I try to treat those around me how they want to be treated, and I believe that can be impactful.

All About Homebody Fibers

How long have you been knitting and sewing?

I’ve been knitting about 10 years and I’ve learned to sew just this year

When did you start Homebody Fibers?

Homebody Fibers began about 3 years ago

Why did you start Homebody Fibers?

After 2 “failed’ attempts at Etsy making and selling finished products I realized I actually really dislike making the same things over and over again and I wanted to eventually start designing and writing patterns. It’s really helped me connect to my knitting more and broaden my skills as well.

What’s your favorite thing you’ve made

My favorite knit piece has to be my Jessie Mae Designs Ripple Crop Top and my favorite sewn piece is my Pomona pants

THE Jessie Mae Designs Ripple Crop Top. Super cute!
THE Pomona Pants.

What’s a piece of advice for someone just starting out in your field?

The moment stopped watching my follower count and focusing on and enjoying my work is when I got more organic engagement and follower growth. Also, people like to see your face and get to know the person behind the work.

Does your company have a mascot?

No

What was your most memorable success?

Recently being featured in an article on Martha Stewart’s website!

What was your most memorable challenge?

Going through something negative within the fiber community stripped me of my motivation to create and it took me a few months to finally be over.

I searched and read the article! So cool, Melissa! Click the picture to see the article for yourself.

The Future for Homebody Fibers

Coming soon: The Move Mountains Baby Blanket

“Oh, the shapes you can make with some yarn and some needles! This is the Move Mountains baby blanket. It’s inspired by Dr. Seuss’s “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” and is not your traditional square blanket.”

Go and give Melissa some LOVE! Like, share, or purchase a stitch marker. Remember, supporting Melissa is supporting a small business and a local maker’s dream.
